Information
While there

wide range of rooms and hotels; I stayed in Kastro which I believe is a very good choice as it is one of the traditional areas of the island. I visited the island in mid July and I was able to find a very good room with an aircondition, fridge and privte bathroom in the area of Kastro at the price of E38! (the landlady's surname is Atsoniou and her name Konstantina)!

I guess they'll have no problem to follow as I've seen many families. In Apollonia there is a good Chemist's open almost all the time!

Food

There are many taverns all over the place--in my opinion try the ones in Artemona.Try the caper salad, 'mastelo' (lamb) and 'revithada' (chickpeas). Don't forget to taste the traditional cookies and macaroons!

Beaches

the beaches are excellent and peaceful. Some of the most beautiful are in Platis Gialos (if you prefer something more private visit the beach which is exactly after Platis Gialos; have in mind that half the road is earth road but don't worry about your car or motorbike!) , Faros (it has two beaches). Also, visit the very north part of the island, Cherronisos, which has a nice small beach. when you visit Artemonas, if you have time and energy left walk up to the old windmills where you'll enjiy a wonderful view!

Historical monuments

All over the place there are the ruins of 'Friktories', ancient towers (6th -3 rd century BC) used for transferring info and warnings by means of fire signals (some of these are on the road to Vathi and to Plati Gialos. Moreover, what will surely catch your eye even if they are not exactly ancient, are the numerous white chapels scaterred all over the island at the most picturesque places of the island. The chapel of the Seven Martyrs behind the area Kastro is amazingly beautiful connected to Kastro by a narrow stone path at the sides of which there is only the sea. There is also a path leading to the sea where you can swim only by diving as there are sharp rocks. don't miss the chapel of Chrisopigi (Golden Spring) and the church of Panagia Poulati (Virgin Poulati). you can also swim there!

Not to miss
make sure you attend 'panigiria' the religious festivities held in honour of saints. Apart from the religious ceremony, there is free traditional food, folk music and dancing. As i've told you the island is full of chapels, so check out the calendar, or ask locals for there will be one somewhere for sure!

Value 4 money
on the whole the prices are quite reasonable; the hotel and the deckchairs in Elia are the most expensive thing on the island, but given that even political figures visit it, you wouldn't expect something less!
